about being overweight.
Beverly Hills can help.

Childhood Obesity Is
Running Out of Control

The incidence of obesity in children is increasing at an alarming rate. According to the latest statistics from the National Health and Nutrition Survey, 22% of children qualify as overweight, up from 15% just ten years ago.

Complications of Obesity in Children

This trend is affecting far more than just the weight of America’s children, it’s also affecting their health, both physically and emotionally.

• One in four overweight children shows signs of type II diabetes
• 60% have one risk factor for heart disease
• Poor self-esteem, which can exacerbate the obesity
• Depressive disorders
• Sleep apnea secondary to upper airway obstruction
• Hypertension
• Atherosclerosis

Beverly Hills’ “xlb. [xpound]”
weight loss plan is designed
exclusively for children 5 to 16.

Every attempt is made to establish
a meal plan that reflects the
child’s food preferences and
the family’s eating patterns.
We make it fun!

Positive Team Approach

At Beverly Hills, our consulting team, made up of a Medical Director, Registered Dietitian and professionally-trained Certified Wellness Counselors, offers a positive approach to weight management for children and adolescents. We realize that the family and child need continual support to achieve small incremental changes in behavior. We also realize that early intervention is better than waiting until the problem is severe.

A sustainable healthy lifestyle is our primary goal of treatment.

Total Family Involvement

Successful treatment involves the whole family. Parents or other primary caregivers are very important role models, particularly for young children. Beverly Hills Weight Loss & Wellness approaches weight control in children by addressing eating habits, food choices, physical activity, and family issues.

In adults with obesity, medications are available to help suppress appetite or interfere with the absorption of fats. The use of these medications has not been studied in pediatric populations and we choose not to use them. Rather, our principle therapy includes diet and exercise, both important in order for weight management to be successful. In growing children the goal for weight management is often weight maintenance, or staying at a current weight while the child grows taller, thus achieving a more appropriate Body Mass Index, or BMI.

To be successful, the meal plan must not only meet nutritional requirements but also ensure compliance by both child and parents.

Flexibility is an important key to success.
